The National Institute of Ancient Drama (INDA) in Syracuse represents one of Italy's leading theater institutions, known for its dedication to the promotion of classical theater. Founded in 1914, INDA organizes an annual season of performances held at the impressive Greek Theater in Syracuse, attracting an international audience.

Below are the main shows staged for the 2024 summer season.
Sophocles' Ajax
One of the highlights of the 2024 season will be a performance of Sophocles' “Ajax.” The play, which will debut on May 22, tells the tragic story of Ajax, one of the greatest heroes of the Trojan War, known for his strength and courage.
The plot explores deep themes such as honor, betrayal and madness, offering a reflection on human frailties.
The play will be staged at 7 p.m. in May and 7:30 p.m. in June, with an average running time of about one hour and forty minutes.
Phaedra by Euripides
Another great classic on the program is Euripides' “Phaedra,” which will be presented starting May 19. This Greek drama tells the story of Phaedra, the wife of Theseus, and her forbidden love for her stepson Hippolytus. The play focuses on human passions and tragedies, offering an intense and dramatic view of family dynamics and uncontrollable emotions.
As with “Ajax,” performances will begin at 7 p.m. in May and 7:30 p.m. in June.
Aristophanes' The Women in the Parliament
Comedy will be no different, with the staging of Aristophanes' “The Women in Parliament” scheduled for June 21. This play offers a lively satire of Athenian politics, telling the story of a group of women who, disguised as men, manage to take control of the city assembly. Through sharp irony, Aristophanes highlights the contradictions and paradoxes of the society of the time, offering insights that are still relevant today.

Address and How to Get There
You can reach the Greek Theater of Syracuse starting from the Hotel Algilà by an easy and pleasant walk or by cab. Leaving the hotel, head northwest along Via Vittorio Veneto until you reach Via della Giudecca. Continue on Via dei Mille and cross Ponte Umbertino, continuing straight on Corso Umberto I. Once you reach Piazza Pancali, continue on Viale Paolo Orsi. Follow the signs to the Neapolis Archaeological Park, where the Greek Theater is located. The journey is about 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by car, passing through some of the city's most characteristic places.
