From July 3rd to August 21st 2021 the ‘Instituto Nazionale Del Dramma Antico’ Italian national institute for classical drama or INDA as they are known, offer us a delightful feast of cultural talent showcasing the best of Sicilian and Italian performers, actors and musicians.

Boasting one of the finest venues for open air theatre in the world, the idea of staging the ancient Greek texts on the stage of the Greek theatre in Siracusa, the very stage for which several were actually created, came in 1914.

As always, there are three performances this season, each offering not only artistic brilliance but also the set, both on and off stage, creating an atmosphere unparalleled.

The first of the three is a tragedy

Le Coefore or khoēphòroi in Greek, is the original language of this performance.

Picture Argo, in Greece around 450 BC, the story of how Orestes is ordered by Apollo to murder his mother and lover as a revenge killing. This tragedy takes it name from the Coefore meaning ‘the bearers of libations for the dead.’ First premiered at the theatre Dionysus in Athens, this play has never lost appeal to the public.

With an assortment of heavyweight characters from Electra the sister to Clytemnestra the Queen, these three episodes culminating in episode three where the choir rejoices, since justice has triumphed. Argos and the royal house of Agamemnon are now free, and it is high time that all traces of the atrocities that occurred were erased, the tremendous revenge is complete, but the Erinyes immediately appear, avenging goddesses of crimes, will leave your thirst for all things theatre truly satisfied.
