Open for Culture: the celebrations for Syracuse's 2750th birthday

Confcommercio and the Municipal Administration of Syracuse have chosen to inaugurate their city's 2750th birthday celebrations with a unique and evocative event: Aperto per Cultura (Open for Culture). This event will take place in the beautiful setting of the historic center of Ortigia, transforming Piazza Duomo into an open-air stage.


Syracuse, a millennial city and crossroads of cultures, is the ideal location to celebrate such an important birthday. Open for Culture represents a unique opportunity to enjoy theatrical and musical performances and art exhibitions in one of the city's most evocative places: the Greek Theater. The format is designed to engage the community and promote the culture, artistic heritage and beauty of the area.

Piazza Duomo: an open-air stage


The heart of the event will be the beautiful Piazza Duomo, which will be transformed into an open-air stage where nationally and internationally renowned artists will perform. The location offers a unique and striking setting for theatrical and musical performances, exhibitions and numerous events. The choice of this place was dictated by its thousand-year history and timeless beauty, making it one of the most striking places in the city.

How to participate


To participate in Aperto per Cultura, simply go to apertopercultura.net and check out the schedule of events. There are a number of free shows scheduled, but also some for a fee, such as those in the Greek Theater. The advice is to book tickets in advance to avoid being left high and dry. In addition, during the event, it will be possible to taste the delicacies of local cuisine, buy typical products and participate in the many cultural activities.


How to get to the event venues


Piazza Duomo is located in the historic center of Ortigia, just a 10-minute walk from the Algilà Hotel. You may choose to take a short walk through the characteristic city streets.

A little farther away is the Greek Theater, located at Syracuse's Neapolis. is about 2.5 km away from the Algilà Hotel. You can reach it on foot with a walk of about half an hour, or rent one of our bicycles free of charge. Alternatively, you can call a cab through our reception desk, with an agreed rate. For those who prefer public transportation, there is a free shuttle bus number 20 to Piazza Archimede, and then take a bus on lines 6, 8, 11, 12 or 13. Alternatively, from Riva Nazario Sauro take a bus of lines 1, 2, 3, 4 or 12.
