Puppet Theatre - Traditional Sicilian Performance Art.
Puppet Theatre - Traditional Sicilian Performance Art.

Hidden away in a small street in the old Jewish quarter Guidecca, of Ortigia, Siracusa is one of Sicily's hidden treasures. The Puppet Theatre or Teatro Di Pupi, the performance art of puppets is tucked away behind unsuspecting doors that lead into a magical world of all things historical and miniature, featuring both a museum and also a theatre not to be missed on your holiday in Siracusa.

A place of art and culture, steeped in history, these puppeteers are quite passionate about their craft and it tells. Presented only in Italian, however you will sure to get the gist of the story, and the added charm of the Italian narration makes it even more delightful. If you are travelling with children then the puppet theatre is a must, only for the reason that you as an adult can have an excuse to see the performance! There are a range of books that can be purchased prior to the show that are a wonderful accompaniment explaining the goings on of the storyline and characters.

The puppets have been handcrafted, in keeping with Sicilian tradition, by family. Over 140 to be precise and as many performances retelling various folklore. Recognised as a 'Puppet theatre of national importance' by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the owners, the Vaccaro brothers are a testament to all things creative. Popular amongst all classes since opening, the medieval and Renaissance literature tales are performed daily to audiences now spanning the globe. In a world moving swiftly into tech, this charming piece of traditional performance art is a valuable and sustainable project that will no doubt carry on into the future with the next family generation of the puppet and set artisans.

Buy your tickets at the Museo beforehand and reserve the best seats in the theatre. The museum holds an archive of videos and newspapers documenting the history and performances of the puppet theatre.
